Evaluations — What to Expect
Language Evaluation
Our language evaluations - whether for early communication development or gestalt language processors - are designed to feel more like play than a test. We create a calm, child-led space where your child can feel safe, engaged, and free to show us who they are. No pressure. No rushing, Just connection and curiosity.
We begin with what matters most: building trust. Whether your child is shy, active, cautious, or exuberant, we take the time to connect through play and presence. Before the evaluation even begins, we'll ask about your child's favorite toys, activities, songs, characters, or routines. These interests help us create a personalized and meaningful experience from the start.
Our play-based approach allows us to observe how your child communicates, understands language, and interacts with others in the most natural way. When children feel comfortable, we gain a clearer picture of their strengths and areas where support may be helpful.
Parents are an essential part of the process. Your knowledge and insight help us understand your child's communication across settings. We'll ask about what's going well, what feels challenging, and what daily life looks like for your family, so we can truly see the full picture — together!
When a child feels safe, seen, and supported, we learn far more than we ever could through a standardized test alone.
Our goal during the evaluation is to understand your child's current communication abilities, to highlight their strengths, identify areas for support, and offer a functional plan tailored to your child and family.
Speech Sound Evaluation
Our speech sound evaluations are designed to be both thorough and child-centered. We take time to connect with your child first so they feel safe, supported, and ready to participate. There is no rushing or pressure! Just a focus on building a connection.
We begin by building trust through play or conversation, depending on your child's age and interests. From there, we gather information in a variety of ways including both structured and informal activities to get a well-rounded understanding of how your child produces speech sounds.
Our evaluations typically include a standardized assessment, informal assessment, stimulability for certain speech sounds, and spontaneous speech sampling through play or conversation to observe how your child uses speech sounds naturally. We're looking at more than just how clearly your child speaks — we assess for articulation difficulties, phonological patterns, or signs of motor speech disorder (like childhood apraxia of speech). Identifying the underlying nature of the difficulty allows us to choose the most appropriate approach and set meaningful and individualized goals.
Parent input is essential. We will ask about your child's speech across settings — home, school, and activities — to understand the real-life impact on communication, social interaction, and participation.
By blending connection, clinical expertise, parent input, and playful exploration, we are able to gather a clear picture of your child's speech sound development and create a plan that's personalized and purposeful.
